Equality

I voted on one issue yesterday. At this point in the current political client, the number one issue that mattered in the election was human rights. I voted solely on the basis of which candidate was going to do the most for those that I love that don’t have the right to marry, to work, to the financial benefits that I enjoy, to healthcare, to little things that I take for granted. Until my brother enjoys every last little thing that I do, I’m not going to be content with our laws.

I will also continue to speak out in the name of love our neighbor. I don’t agree with the church not performing gay marriages and not allowing gay clergy. I think it is backwards and just another reason (I have a list) that the church is not thriving in this country. If you say “Open hearts, open minds, open doors,” then back it up. Jesus told us to love our neighbor as ourselves. I’m really tired of people claiming that evil and bigotry is God’s will.

A few quick thoughts about the election.

Yes, I know it makes history, but I really don’t like all the “America elects it’s First Black President” headlines. Can we please do better than sticking a label like that on Obama? This country is never, ever going to get past its racism if we insist on being proud of ourselves for the “achievement” of electing a black man as president.

Second, the bigots won all over the place, even in California. I’m so young that I’ve never seen nastiness like I’ve seen in this election. Commercials implying that if Prop 8 didn’t pass children would be indoctrinated that boys should marry boys? What’s the deal with people? And the ones against this did it in the name of God? I’m sickened by that.

My totally jerkball coworker commented that “it’s already hard to get a job if you’re not a minority.” I restrained myself and he’s still unharmed.
